Outcroppings. Shown here on the side of a hill, protruding out of the ground, as if the soil had eroded away around them. Here the steps are woven in through the outcropping for a smooth path down the hill. Plantings in and around the hill give a natural softening to the overall design.
Flagstone patio and path
Flagstone makes a wonderful natural looking path. Natural flagstone is available in many colors. Here Eden Stone is laid with gaps of between 2 and 4 inches, then surrounded with rich black soil. Planted throughout the path are different kinds of moss, veronica and sedum, which will shortly fill in all of the gaps between the flagstone, giving a feel that this path has been here longer than the house itself. These pictures were taken shortly after completion.
Here, the flagstone patio was laid on a base of 4"-6" of compacted class material to give the patio structure and strength. A layer of sand follows, then the flagstone. Paver edge boarder is installed around the edge of the patio, formed to the flagstones natural curves, to hold it all together. Here, with sand between the flagstone, the gaps are kept to a minimum with few gaps over 1inch.
